Room 215. William Morris was born in Walthamstow, east London in 1834. Morris is best known as the 19th century’s most celebrated designer, but he was also a driven polymath who spent much of his life fighting the consensus. A key figure in the Arts & Crafts Movement, Morris championed a principle of handmade production that didn’t chime with the Victorian era’s focus on industrial ‘progress’.
The William Morris suite is located here on the second floor in the turret section of the hotel. The turret is of the Romanesque revival style and was introduced to the United States from Europe in the 1850’s by a man by the name of Henry Hobson Richardson and was first seen in building architecture in the state of Indiana. It was popular through the 1910’s and is now know in the United States as the Romanesque Revival Style.
This Room has a spacious bathroom with a seven head shower feature. The main room, which is located in the main turret section features custom made carpeting and monumental custom-made draperies that match the luxurious king-sized bed. The four-poster bed is quite a statement in itself and features a wooden set of steps you will ascend, before lying down into a mattress cloud sent from heaven above.
The room is painted in a deep dessert mustard color and has the feel of a bygone era. The room features some books and artworks by William Morris as well, and a Tiffany style lamp upon the large writing desk that is also in the suite.
This room was occupied by Debby Boone in March of 2023.
